All of us have seen the organization charts of prominent companies and institutions. It showcases the hierarchy and internal structure of an organization comprising ranks and departments. It not only represents the roles and positions in an organization, but also, the flow of information between people and departments.

We take these charts all the more seriously when we join a new company and try to figure out the hierarchy of roles and where we fit in. You must be thinking “Why do we need to learn to make an Organization Chart? It’s very simple- take boxes, add lines, and thereafter fill the boxes with text.” It's simple but also very boring. All presenters end up creating a lifeless diagram like this:

The best option is to add headshots of the people you are mentioning: it infuses life into the organization chart and makes it look more personal. But in case you do not want to do that and create a basic chart with titles and hierarchy, then we suggest you create a creative organization chart like this:

Isn’t this attention-grabbing? Follow these steps to create the above Organization Chart:

 

Step 1: Create the top box

 

  • Click the Insert tab, go to the Shapes menu and select Rounded Rectangle.
  • Drag and resize it.
  • Click on the yellow square box and drag it to get the shape as shown below.

  • Right click on the shape, click Format Shape and under Solid Fill select gray color as shown.

  • Press CTRL and drag the shape to copy the shape
    • Resize to get a smaller shape.
    • Format Shape > Shape Fill > Select Gray- 25% C
    • Click Solid Line (in Format Shape) > Select dark gray color as shown > 7.25 width.
    • Keep it above the shape created earlier.

Step 2: Create circular shape

 

  • Select the Oval shape from the Shapes menu.
  • Press shift and drag a little to get desired size.
  • Click Format Shape > Solid Fill > select White color for the base.

 

For the outer line:

  • Under Solid Line, select the color of your choice.
  • Select 12.25 Width.

Once you have created the circular shape:

 

  • Press Shift + Ctrl simultaneously, click and drag the image thrice. (This way you will get four circular images of the same size.)
  • Press Shift and select all four circular shapes.
  • Go to the Format tab> Click Align
  • Select the Distribute Horizontally option.

You can customize the colors of the circles as per your preference:

Step 3: Create the base of the Organization Chart

 

There are two ways to create them. Follow the one that is convenient for you.

First method to create the shape is to copy the Inverted Rounded Rectangle that you created for the top box.

The second method is to go to the Insert tab > Click the Shapes menu > Select Flowchart: terminator.

  • Resize the shape and totate the shape to 900 using the rotating handle.
  • Duplicate the shape seven times, by simply pressing SHIFT+CTRL and drag
  • Place two shapes under each circle or as per your requirements.

Color : To fill color in the shape > Select Format Shape > Solid Fill > Color of your choice

 

For outer line:

  • Go to Format shape > Solid Line.
  • To fill color, select the shape > go to the Line option > Color. (You can use eyedropper to select same colors as ours or choose your desired one from the color menu bar.)
  • Select Thick Thin line in Compound Type and 8.75 pt Width.

Step 4: Place Lines

 

The next step is to place lines to connect the shapes and give it a look of a chart. Follow these steps to create lines.

 

  • Select Line from the Shapes menu.
  • Hold the Shift key and drag to draw the line till the distance you desire.
  • To alter the type at the end of the arrow (see screenshot below) go to FORMAT SHAPE > Line > Solid Line > End Arrow Type > Select Oval Arrow.
