Trends- for anything- are full of surprises and unexpected outcomes, that can transform the era, decade, or year and become the biggest milestone.

The same is applicable to design trends, that keep on taking us to new unexplored destinations every once in a while. Every year a new design crop is harvested after the previous year’s laborious activities by the experts. Some “crops” are trendy, some motivate and invigorate while some make our heads hurt and eyes ache. New becomes old and old is new again, with unusual variations, simply adding to the overall excitement of playing with new techniques, objects, and many more!

To say that 2020 has been a strange year is definitely not an understatement, especially when the world has been turned topsy-turvy due to the pandemic hitting our livelihood. The imposition of lockdown, forced restrictions, closure of educational institutions, and so on have brought about something unexpected. Distance learning, virtual communication, and not to mention work from home opportunities have seen tremendous growth, encouraging people to be fast adapters to changed situations, especially in periods of dramatic shifts experienced by all of us.

With the year 2020 soon bidding adieu, no matter how tormenting it has been, the designers have already started showing glimmers of what the future holds. There is a feeling in the air that anything is possible- that we are about to witness something revolutionary, changing our lives and design for the better!

So, let us put on our thinking caps and experience 10 design trends all set to bring character and flair to the year 2021. These trends are not only game-changers but industry shakers, defining the experiential landscape of the new year!

Note- Since the year 2020 has been rather unproductive for almost all the industry players, design pundits have drifted back to some of the previous year trends like 3D compositions, flat illustrations, and others. So, that they can see the light of the day and remain alive in the presentation design world.

1. Subdued and Muted Undertones

While vibrant colors have always been appreciated, 2021 is the year of more muted color combinations in our design. Why? Because colors are symbolic of the overall mood and ambiance and as we all know the chaos and upheaval that marked 2020, 2021 is due for a little downtime. Design trends are bound to follow this pursuit and become more muted rather than being vibrant!

2021 desires to be a little more relaxed in its approach especially with a lot of confusing, loud and negative messages received in the year 2020. It is time for a color detox with a more muted color palette that feels safe and even nostalgic at times.

Muted Color Palette Options

Beyond being reassuring and trustworthy, muted color combinations feel a lot more natural and relaxing, the vibe that we all craved for in the year 2020. They bring greater clarity and an organic feel that is certainly needed in our presentation designs!

It doesn’t matter if the font color is light or dark, muted colors are bound to stand out nonetheless and blend perfectly with all the elements just like in these designs:

2. Geometric shapes to the rescue

While the previous years were fixated on abstract and unique design elements, 2021 is bound to go back to the basics. The trends are predicted to revert to geometric shapes, as they impart a retro feel. This, in turn, evokes nostalgic feelings, which was kind of missing in the year 2020.

Additionally, geometric shapes accord a structure and order to the design, which is really required in the coming year due to the tensed atmosphere we all are dealing with.

From the design trends point of view, integrating geometric patterns is much easier than working with fluid and abstract shapes. Therefore, it is "trendy" in the coming year, which is much more simplistic and convenient in its approach. Here is another example to prove our point:

Geometric shapes add a different element to a brochure design

Geometric shapes can also be used to add a lot of depth and texture to a visual just like the one shown below. Notice how the text-laden geometric shape towards the left creates all the difference to the overall design and makes the text a lot more visible to the naked eye.

3. Vectors and Flat Illustrations (similar to what 2020 offered)

A trend overplayed in 2020 but hasn't lost its charm as of now- Vectors and Flat out Icons!

Like we said, the design trends in the coming year are predicted to be cyclic in nature. If something goes trendy, it will become obsolete after a while and then it will be in fashion once again. This is the case with vectors and flat icons that act as powerful visual communication tools. They suit every social media platform, infographics, etc. so brands are shifting their focus on these visual adapters rather than the usual icons to claim the throne.

Aligned with the simplistic approach of 2020, this trend is bound to make your presentations powerfully attractive. Not only this they are seemingly easy to digest, without any intricate patterns involved.

4. Classic Serifs

The serif fonts are there since the 15th century and have been used widely by designers. They are simple, keeping in line with the trend of 2021, leaning more towards inherent elegance and sophistication. These fonts evoke nostalgic feelings as they take you back to older, fonder, and better times.

To put an end to the nightmare that 2020 has been and imbibe safer feelings into our design pattern, serif fonts are much preferable.

5. Animated Content

Social media boom, more so in the year 2020, designers are bound to get busy in creating something spectacular for their clients. And what better way to create and indulge at the same time than using animations right? So, animated posts will be given more weightage over flat designs, as they are more dynamic in every sense and add that dash of spice needed in every presentation.

6. Nature Inspired, Nature Approved

We human beings have always neglected Mother nature and her gifts, and so we are facing her wrath in 2020. This is why designs of 2021 are leaning more towards natural and organic elements like muted colors, geometric shapes, and more. The resurgence of organic colors and elements reflect the “back to nature” stance that we are all up for. Considering nature to be the centerpiece of the design, relays feelings of a positive and beautiful world, the one left unexplored in 2020 (not that we did not want to but because we couldn't)!

7. Crisp Data Visuals

Sometimes less is more in the design world, especially when data visuals are concerned. The year 2021 is a data and technology driven year where everything is turning virtual in nature and so simple and crisp data visuals will take the lead. Presenters often get carried away while designing data visualizations and cram too much information in little space. This leads to information overload, which is neither pleasing to the eye nor easily comprehensible (no matter how many efforts a presenter has put in).

Consider these charts and graphs that help the audience understand the data in minutes:

But, sometimes you don’t even require graphs to communicate your point. All you need is an interesting data point or statistical image like these:

8. Color….less Trend

Rather abrupt design trend isn’t it?

Although multicolored designs are very homely and comforting, 2021 will be the year of complete backlash. In an ultra-fast paced, look-at-me world, rather than competing with the bigger and brighter, it is an intelligent decision to head off in the opposite direction. Which is what, designers of 2021 are bound to do by “blacking” out everything!

There will be a complete “blackout” in the world of design in 2021 which will bring nostalgic feelings like an old Sunday movie brings. The hypnotic and magical charm of old black and white movies will be experienced in our designs and presentations alike.

9. Social Media friendly layouts (social media decks)

As social media has pushed a lot of boundaries ever since its emergence, it is a trend that will be heartily embraced in 2021 also, but with a new and improved way to communicate- social media decks! This will be the next big thing for the designers.

But why?

Essentially social media decks are shareable across different platforms like LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, etc, and are equipped with a great deal of information. Thus providing an interactive experience to the viewer. Therefore, they are believed to gain momentum even more in the year 2021, when the world is all about virtual reality!

10. 3D Content

Rendering 3D effects to a design has been a work in progress for a while now and it seems this trend will continue to spread its charm in 2021. Thanks to all the extraordinary developments in the design world, 3D compositions are here to stay much longer than anticipated!

This is just the beginning……

To conclude we would say that predictions are always in the laps of Gods, but these unprecedented times have made us even more optimistic about experimenting with newer trends and adapting ourselves to the new normal.
