If you are starting a business, whether it’s full-time or part-time, one of the best things you can do is write a business plan. It provides a fresh perspective on your ideas and enables you to think about your organization. It asks you to consider the basics of your business, such as what activities you will perform, who your customers will be, and how much money you need to generate, among others. We recommend that all business owners sit and write down their plans regardless of the size or nature of their enterprise.

What is a Business Plan?

A business plan is a formal proposal drawn by the company owners for submission to banks or other financial institutions in order to apply for loans. It also explains the following:

  • Why does your business deserve investment?
  • How much money do you need and what will you use it for?
  • How long will the business take to become profitable?
  • What business opportunities are present to you?
  • What business experience do you have?
  • Who are your business partners?

The business plan includes description of your operations, products or services, sales forecasts, operational costs, and marketing plans. It also contains background information of the people involved in the company. It sets out the opportunities and risks, and explains what is in it for the investor.

Purpose of a Business Plan?

The purpose of a business plan is to determine what your company does, how it will make money, who your target customers are, who the major contributors are, and where you see your organization in five to ten years.

A business plan is a document that contains the information about what you would do in an ideal situation where your company has adequate material to keep up with the supply and demand. There are various other benefits of business planning as it allows business owners to make objective decisions using their experience, garner adequate attention and funds, showcase industry knowledge that they possess, and more.

A business plan also helps you determine your mistakes and identify failures. If company owners are able to identify failures, they can learn from them and make informed decisions. Business plans are not only used by companies but also by non-profit organizations to achieve their future goals.

A business plan includes strategy and goals for the organization to reach. It is therefore important for planners to consider different scenarios that might impact their decisions before committing themselves to a set idea.

Business Plan Sections

The following sections present various elements of a business plan. So let us dive right in!

1. Executive Summary

An executive summary is a brief description of a business plan. It highlights major information about the business plan that will help executive members make better decisions.

It is not meant to replace a business plan, rather it gives an opportunity to the members to skim through all the major details quickly and easily. This helps in understanding the key developments of your operations and use them to your advantage.

An executive summary includes a description of the business plan.

It also includes the following information:

  • What does your business do?
  • Who does it serve?
  • Where is it located?
  • The executive team members who are involved.
  • How will your business serve its customers/clients.?
  • What makes your business different from others? (i.e. competitors)

Roles and Responsibilities of the Executive Team Members

structuring and formatting your business plan efficiently. Your executive summary should be written in a way that is easily understandable by the team for which you are creating it. Your writing style should match their areas of comprehension so that all of the important information can be absorbed and retained by them.

Additionally, your executive summary should include your overall business plan while also leaving out unnecessary information. It should be to the point, factual, and easy to read.

At the end of the executive summary is a list of team members who have reviewed and/or approved what you've written. It is essential to form this summary so that they're up-to-date with what the company is doing, even though they may get to it once every few weeks or months.

Many executive summaries are written in the past tense; however, some executive teams prefer present tense. It is up to you to decide which fits your summary the best.

Executive summary templates are available for all the team members who need help writing a detailed document for their business. The templates include all of the necessary components that are needed in order to produce a good product which includes team qualifications, roles, names and titles, board qualifications, roles within the company, and more.

2. Company Profile

A company profile is a business document that provides high-level information about its operations. It is most commonly used by individuals who are keen on learning more about the organization and financing it.

Unlike a business plan, a company profile is one to two pages in length, although it may be longer if additional information is needed to fully describe the business. It usually includes marketing strategies or other pertinent business practices, as requested by potential business partners.

The profile gives the reader an understanding of the size and structure, operations, location and environment, legal form (for example, sole proprietorship or corporation), policies and procedures, etc., of the company.

3. Products and Services

A product is a tangible item, such as a work of art or an appliance. It can also be intangible, such as a service or credit. For example, financial services include saving accounts with interest rates and checking accounts which offer easy access to funds.

In the same manner, a service encompasses intangible or physical items. It can be a massage at the spa and can also embody hiring someone to clean your home.

Products and services are not interchangeable terms, although they often go hand in hand on shelves or digital displays.

If you're thinking of starting a business, then consider various aspects that come with it. One of these is the potential products that your company can sell and offer some ideas to improve them as you go along.

In order to gain a better understanding of how to write about products in a business plan, it is a good idea to search for companies who have used this strategy before. For example, the marketing plan of hair care brand Aussie was analyzed to understand how effective it was at marketing its products.

4. Market Overview

This section describes the market in which the company operates.

In its simplest form, a market overview provides a synopsis of the market size and trends, offering at least some information that you can find in market research reports.

For this reason, market overviews are often used by managers as initial research tools. They provide a useful starting point for investigations and serve as a primer on market segments, trends, drivers and inhibitors, forecasts (e.g., 5-year projections), profiles of leading companies in the industry sector, etc.

A market overview is often divided into two parts: market size and market trends.

Market size refers to the total market value of all the products and services sold within a sector; while market trends refer to the factors that influence change or stability: either growth drivers or inhibitors that cause markets to expand or contract.

5. Product

A product is the most important element of any business. It is what you are selling to your customers that you should mention in your business plan.

A product is the result of perfecting what you are offering. It represents the final product that your customers will experience or buy. It should meet certain requirements to become successful in the market, such as being desirable to a large group of people and having a good quality.

There are four main product types identified by the business world. These include product line, product mix, product configuration, and product bundle.

  • A product line is a group of products that share common characteristics such as similar quality or price.
  • A product mix is the total number of goods offered for sale by a business at one time.
  • A product configuration includes variations of an individual product offering, including its size, color, components, and features.
  • A product bundle is a group of products that are sold together at a  price lower than buying all the items individually.

Additionally, if you offer your product for online sale, there are two main product types: digital and physical products. A digital product is an intangible product that exists in a digital form. It doesn't need shipping or storage because it's downloadable and can be consumed instantly. A physical product is a one-time purchase or subscription, such as a book or toy.

6. Revenue Model

A revenue model is the key component of every business plan. This section outlines the revenue and financial strategy of your business or product. It shows how you intend to generate revenue and includes information regarding revenue sources, cost structure, gross margin, and profit margin.

The revenue model section includes specific information about how much revenue your business needs in order to be profitable in the long-term. It is also useful in showing the breakdown of revenue based on the products, services, or activities of the organization.

There are many different revenue models such as subscription-based revenue, advertising revenue, licensing revenue, and revenue sharing revenue.

A revenue model does not replace a business plan. It is rather an extended form of it that you can present as a table or chart from which you can take cues.

Your revenue model should be realistic. The figures you use in this section should be well-thought out and based on evidence collected during market research. It is important to have all the revenue sources and revenue targets in complete agreement with the revenue model.

The revenue model should also show how you intend to generate income  geographically, such as in specific countries or natural areas. It is also  important to include information about what percentage of revenue is generated from each geographical location and how it is distributed.

The revenue model plays a huge role in determining whether you have appropriate funding sources and target earning amounts for your business. Because of this, it's important to have sections that can stand up to scrutiny from potential investors.

7. Operating Model

An operating model is an abstract representation of the basic components of an organization and how they relate to one another. It can be used in strategy planning, operations management, organizational development, and change management.

The operating model provides a common framework for teams to use when communicating with each other about the types of change that need to occur for an organization to be successful. It includes elements such as the mission and objectives of the organization, division and organization of work, reporting structure, and more.

When used in strategy planning, the operating model lays a strong foundation for organizations to improve their performance and achieve better alignment in their mission and values. It helps take the complexity out of strategy by identifying the few components that are necessary for success.

When using an operating model in strategy planning, there are three separate components that must be considered: people, processes, and systems.

The people component includes decisions about how work is divided and organized, the roles and responsibilities of employees and their managers, and how people are incentivized to perform well. The processes component includes decisions about what activities need to be done in order for the business to function, such as how projects are planned or budgets developed.

When used in operations management, the operating model helps managers use their resources more effectively. It can help them identify where an overlap or redundancy occurs. It also ensures that people are not over-utilizing or under-utilizing their time.

The operating model also provides a basis for organizational development and change management. The systems component includes the decisions about how information is gathered and how it is used to improve strategy.

When using an operating model in operations management, the three components are also people, processes, and systems. The people include decisions about who does what type of work and whether there will be opportunities for employees to gain new skills or move into different roles or not.

8. Competitive Analysis

A competitive analysis is a simple method for gaining a better understanding of how your competitors are performing. It helps  assess the activity, size, and value provided by those competitors.

Writing a competitive analysis of your competitor can be difficult, but it is very important. If you are entering the market with a new idea, you need to convince potential investors to fund your project. This is where competitive analysis can help you the most!

  1. How big are your competitors?
  2. How much value do they provide to their customers?
  3. How do they compare with you in terms of service model (e.g. number of research users, percentage of web traffic dedicated to support, etc.)?
  4. How do they compare with you in terms of platform (e.g. number of languages covered, size and quality of training material)?
  5. What do your competitors' customers value the most?
  6. How does your competitors’ product positioning compare with yours?

To do a competitive analysis, it is important to document the actions of your competitor. These include their website, marketing materials, and any other promotional material. It is also very advantageous to have some sort of benchmark for your competitor. This can be extracted from Google Trends data or Alexa traffic reports. This is important for any comparison you want to make.

  • Product features
  • Website design & usability
  • Social media presence
  • Pricing strategies
  • Branding strategies

9. Customer Definition

A customer can be an individual, business, government, or organization that pays to receive goods and services from another party.

They are crucial for any retailer as they help increase the revenue by purchasing the goods. They also provide vital feedback to improve the business. Describing what a customer is creates a roadmap that leads to the development of a customer or buyer persona.

A customer persona describes the characteristics, behaviors, and goals of people who are likely to purchase your product.

A buyer persona is more complex than a customer persona. It includes additional information about the stakeholders in the buying process, such as internal influencers in an organization or value-chain partners in an industry.

When you create a customer persona, it's a good idea to answer the following questions:

  • Who is your target audience?
  • What motivates them to purchase your product?
  • How do they decide what to buy and from whom to buy it?
  • Where do they go for information and advice?
  • What is their budget?
  • When do they make their purchases?
  • How does your product fit their lives, and what problems does it solve?

10. Customer Acquisition

Customer acquisition is quintessential to any business plan. A key aspect to note here is that it is not limited to just the marketing department.

Customer acquisition is the first step in the overall marketing process and an important one at that. Therefore, before drafting this section of your business plan, it is essential to understand what is meant by customer acquisition, how it links to other marketing aspects like retention and loyalty, why the term subsequently came into existence, and how companies are looking for new ways to acquire customers more effectively.

In a business environment, customer acquisition refers to the process of increasing the customer base by selling services or products to them. While it typically involves a company trying to bring in new clients through advertising and other promotions, there are some methods of customer acquisition which don't rely on marketing.

This helps increase the focus on the overall customer experience rather than making more sales. It also helps in creating unparalleled customer retention strategies that focus on keeping the current customers engaged and loyal to your business, as opposed to acquiring new ones.

For example, building brand loyalty and encouraging shared experiences between consumers and brands are both ways to create engagement.

Many companies have been focusing on retaining customers than acquiring new ones as the market is maturing and customer acquisition has become more expensive. Newer forms of marketing such as social media advertising and influencer relations are useful in reducing the amount spent on paid customer acquisition methods such as television ads and billboards.

Therefore, many companies are embracing it wholeheartedly.

Many companies are also focusing on targeting actively engaged users as opposed to "low-hanging fruit" (people who are incredibly easy to sell to) as brands today must compete for the attention of consumers by delivering effective products and services that create value.

11. Traction

Traction is one of the most misunderstood concepts in business and is often considered synonymous with growth or validation, two things that are incredibly important when it comes to scaling a business. However, it needs to be garnered effectively.

What is Business Traction?

Traction is a measure of how effectively your business converts its opportunities into real customers. When you're just getting started, it's fairly easy to win favors from friends and family or generate excitement within early adopters. However, traction also helps measure the flip side — what comes after those initial supporters: actual paying customers.

Therefore, it is all about acceleration: going from zero to one hundred miles an hour in the shortest time possible. It is the process of applying multiple tactics to achieve business growth as quickly as possible, ideally doubling or tripling the size each month!

Now we know what is traction but it is also important to note what it is NOT!

What isn’t Business Traction?

Customer acquisition is not business traction, because it does not progress your company towards the goal of doubling or tripling its size every month.  However, customer acquisition is a piece of business traction.  Similarly, driving sales or marketing campaigns and piloting new features is not business traction but they are the pieces of business traction that help you bring in more positive results.

How do you achieve Business Traction?

In order to have business traction, you need to generate measurable results that increase the speed of growth. This implies:

  • You need to generate results. Results are any sign that people are actually using your product.
  • Your traction must be measurable. Measurable means quantitative, meaning you can report numbers.
  • Your traction needs to indicate acceleration, which means your growth rate is increasing over time or you are growing at a much faster rate.

12. Management Team

The management team for a business or company consists of senior managers who oversee the success and/or failure of an organization. It does not always consist of one person but rather a group of individuals.

Management roles vary from one company to another.

For example, the CEO of a company has many management roles, including recruiting talent to work for the company, setting salaries for all employees, dealing with stockholders, and providing direction for the company. The COO/CFO of a business also plays an important role in managing key decisions but does not have as much power as the CEO.

Management teams have a large impact on the success of an organization. They lead to higher profits, increased productivity, and greater influence.

A bad management team can, however, ruin a business's reputation, credibility, and financial stability. More often than not, it can lead to the failure of the company or organization. Therefore, it should be well-structured.

13. Funding

We all want to start a business. It sounds fun and easy. We get to choose what kind of work we're doing without any rules, so we are tempted to sign up there and then.

Unfortunately, there's some bad news: you can't just start a new company with nothing but dreams. Businesses cost money. And to get that money, you need to sell your idea to investors who will hopefully give you enough cash to turn your dreams into reality.

But there are certain questions that come into our mind when we think about acquiring funds and these are: what do these investors expect and how do I convince them that my company is worth their time and money? We use this section to answer your questions.

Writing the business plan will help you keep track of all of your ideas, which investors will want to see. You can also tailor it towards your audience, and add things like graphs and projections in financial terms if you're good at that kind of thing. To find the right investors, you need to know who they are and what they'll want to see — will this be a new technology?

What will your competition look like? Once your business plan is complete, you need to be patient while looking for the right investors. You can get them interested by sending it or having a business broker sell your plan on your behalf. Once the money starts coming in, just keep at it! The extra financial support could mean even more success than you imagined for your company.

Here are a few ways for perfecting your business plan:

  • Your approach should be positive and confident while being humble. You can't make any big claims or showcase yourself as the greatest person alive. Investors want a good deal, not something they feel sorry for.
  • Make sure your business plan has the basic information covered, like your company's name, mission statement, location, etc. You can get fancy with things like graphs of your financial projections with the following information
    • overview of what you're selling
    • how will it work?
    • who's using this technology?

Once your business plan is complete, you can now use it to sell your ideas!  .

14. Financials

Business financials are the documents that provide information about what the company owns, lows, and is owed. These documents are important because they show how profitable a business is.

Businesses use this information to make decisions about how to run their operations. For example, they might decide that buying equipment will increase the revenue if it costs less than the annual revenue.

The most common business financial documents are balance sheets, income statements , cash flow statements, and tax forms.

Such financial reports summarize how profitable a business is, what is the worth of its assets, and whether it has enough liquid capital to meet short-term obligations or not. They provide detailed accounts of how much money comes from the customers, what expenses were incurred in getting those customers, how much inventory was used in the process, and how much cash was tied up in finished goods while all of this was taking place.

Business financials aren't just a collection of facts. They provide key insights about a business's strategy. For example, a small company might be very profitable but have few assets compared to its sales revenue. This means that if it was sued, it would be very difficult for the plaintiffs to collect any damages. On the other hand, a big company might have lower margins but greater market power. So they are bound to enjoy bigger and better profits.

Business financial statements are prepared by accountants who follow a set of standards promulgated by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB). Many companies also prepare internal financial reports according to International Accounting Standards (IAS), which are similar but more detailed.

Distributors are a critical part of the supply chain. They play a crucial role in manufacturing and resale by providing customer service and delivery operations.

Distributor business plan templates allow a high level of standardized planning across various businesses with a range of product needs.

The business plan for a distributor must include information on how they will acquire inventory, which products they will sell and at what price, how they will deliver those items and the costs involved. Good distribution business plans also explain how they are better than their competitors and present market research evidence to back up their claim.

Distributor business plan templates can be adjusted for the length, but should provide standard information on operations, personnel, finances and marketing, among other things. They may also include additional slides that are appropriate for specific types of distributors.

One-Page Business Plan Templates

A one page business plan is a great marketing tool for your small business, as it can help you save time and money while communicating your message to potential clients. Instead of focusing on unnecessary information that nobody cares about, you can focus on showing your offerings that make you different from others in the market.

A one page website is structured differently than most traditional websites. For example, the most important information appears first so viewers will know exactly what you can offer and how to contact you. Businesses often use a one-page website as an online landing page or to market themselves.

The one thing that nearly all entrepreneurs have in common is the need to present their ideas with a business plan. While this is not that necessary when you are starting, it becomes essential when you are seeking funding from venture capitalists or banks.

There are many advantages to using one page templates for your webpage. These include formatting the information you want to present more easily, increasing user convenience by eliminating clicks/navigation, making it easier for readers to navigate important information, etc.

Here are some of the examples of startup business templates to get you started:
