Guys you are inspiration to the world, me included. kudos........
but it unfortunate am using office 2007 which do have some features.↓-
Your compliment is heartening to hear, Festus. And you are right, 2010 and 2013 versions are indeed more powerful than 2007. Upgrade soon, you won't regret. :)↓

Amazing tutorial Anuj...but I can't seem to see the Merge Shapes/Fragment option under Drawing Tools Format. I have Office 2010 and in an earlier post you indicated that 2010 & 2013 has this functionality. Any ideas why these options are not showing up?↓
-
Hey Lore,
Thanks for the compliment and pointing it out (Don't know how it skipped our mind!)
The feature is there but hidden in PowerPoint 2010. Follow these steps to permanently integrate the functionality in your PowerPoint Ribbon:
1. Click the File tab (extreme left corner in the PowerPoint Ribbon)
2. Click Options
3. Select the "Customize Ribbon" option
4. Under the "Choose commands from" drop-down menu, select "Commands Not in the Ribbon"
5. Now, locate the "Combine Shapes" command from the list
6. Create a New Group within an existing tab or create a New Tab using the dialog box on right.
7. Add 'Combine Shapes' to the new tab or group you have created
8. Click Ok to save the changes you have done.

PowerPoint 2010 provides 4 options under Combine Shapes: Shape Union, Shape Combine, Shape Intersect, and Shape Subtract.
Use the Shape Intersect option that will serve the same purpose as Fragment option in PowerPoint 2013.↓-
I got the new toolbar item for Combine (thanks!) - but it is grayed out when selecting both the shape and the picture. If I add two shapes, and select, it is fine.
Is there another format of the picture that works - did not on .jpg or .bmp.↓-
There's a workaround Alice. Insert a rectangle from the Shapes menu and cover the complete slide with it. Now right click, Format Shape, Click Picture Fill and fill the rectangle with your image. Now insert the oval shape and follow the same steps as in the blog post. Select the rectangle, then the oval and in Combine Shapes, click Combine Intersect. It'll work! Sorry for the late reply.↓

Hi, I followed up with your instructions but the "combine shapes" features stays in dim color which i cannot select it, how to get it solved? appreciate for help!↓
-
Glad you found it. Yes, it stays in dim color, we checked. But there is a workaround. We will convert the image into shape! Here's how:
Insert a rectangle from the Shapes menu and cover the complete slide with it. Now right click, Format Shape, Click Picture Fill and fill the rectangle with your image. Now insert the oval shape and follow the same steps as in the blog post. Select the rectangle, then the oval and in Combine Shapes, click Combine Intersect. This will work! Sorry for the late reply Andrew.↓

That's great Kirit! Indeed, e-learning materials and flipped classrooms have to be really engaging. The stand out effect will surely assist in creating such slides. Thanks for appreciating. :)↓

thank for sharing, really useful but my PPT version doesn't have some features which I might need my IT for help on (such as "Merge shapes" function).↓
-
This feature is hidden in PowerPoint 2010. Follow the instructions we gave to Lore in comments and you'll be able to use the feature!↓
-
Andrew Lee,
I am have the same issue of not getting the results as shown. When using the shape intersect (PPT2010), my image always ends up inside the shape as a whole. It does not extract the image portion selected. Did you get this to work?↓
-
-
Amazing..↓

Thank you George!!!↓

wow! it motivates me to create more wow slides!! Good job slideteam -xoxo-↓

Hello.
Very nice
Am using PPT 2016. I dont find the Merge and Fragment Option in Ribbon. Am I wrong somewhere?
Regards
Arvind↓-
Hi Arvind, it should be there. Perhaps, the following post by Geetesh Bajaj, founder of Indezine, will help you locate it- http://www.indezine.com/products/powerpoint/learn/shapes/2016/shape-fragment.html↓
-
-
good one..!↓

Thank you Nehhaa! :)↓

I'm using 2016. I combine the image with the shape but everything turns blue, including the image. When I select fragment, I just get a cut-out circle. I can't see that I'm doing anything different. What do you suggest?↓
-
Hi Jaquie, are you selecting the elements in the right order? Select the image first, next the circle and then click Fragment. If you do the other way round, you'll end up with that problem. We can think of only this probable reason that is causing you the problem.↓
-
Ah yes. Select the image then the shape. Thank you!↓
-
Our pleasure! :)↓
-
-
-
-
When I combine the two, everything becomes blue including the image. I tried both ways and the same thing happened. What do you suggest?↓
-
Hi, interesting topic! Could we make the similar function in PPT 2011 of Mac? If yes, how?↓
-
Hi Tun, we are sorry we can't offer much help in this regards since we are working on Windows. I hope you are able to create this effect on Mac too. Sorry once again.↓
-
-
Thank you↓

Most welcome Adel! :)↓

Hello:
I am trying to use the stand out effect in my presentation. You have mentioned that once you use the shape intersect feature, you have to insert the full visual once again and send it backwards. I am just not able to do it. Can you please let me know where I am going wrong.
Thanks↓-
Hi Sapna, sorry for the late reply. We did not temporarily have access to PowerPoint 2010. It's very easy- Once you have intersected the shape, insert the same picture again using the Insert tab> Picture (not Picture Fill in rectangular box like last step). Then go to the Format tab Picture tools and click Send Backward. The intersected picture will come forward. You can now apply Artistic Effects (Blur) on the full screen image and get the Stand Out effect. Is it working now? Let us know if you are still having any problem. Thanks.↓

-
Great effect..... thanks so much↓
-
Totally our pleasure, Lisa! Glad you loved the effect. :)↓
