Types of Kaizen events are:

Point Kaizen:

  • Point Kaizen is well-known for its ready, aim, fire approach
  • It focuses on quick changes required at workstations (departments and companies)
  • After identifying the problem at the workstation, it considers measures that do not involve comprehensive planning to enforce a swift solution

Line Kaizen:

  • Planning is an upstream process, and procurement flows, so both departments can be improved

Plane Kaizen:

  • Plane Kaizen is also known as Value Stream where a company decides to withhold and replace traditional departments with a structure involving product families

Cube Kaizen:

  • Kaizen is used to make improvements in interconnected processes
  • This type of event helps in developing and enhancing the company's business and positively impacting the supply chain as well as customers

Slide 6

This slide illustrates the 5Ws (who, what, where, when, and why) to select Kaizen event for continuous improvements.

Instructor’s Notes:

The 5Ws to select a Kaizen event are:

What:

  • What is the problem?
  • What can be done to improve it?

Why:

  • Why did something happen?
  • If it is good, can it be used again? If it is bad, it can be changed?

When:

  • When did it (malfunction) happen?
  • When can it happen in future?
  • If there is an issue with the timing, then this step itself addresses the situation

Where:

  • Where did it take place?
  • Was the location good or bad? If it was bad, has the lesson been learnt the same location should not be used again

Who:

  • Who is involved in the process?
  • Are they the right people for the job or not?
  • Changing which, and how many personnel, will lead to the desired outcome?

Instructor’s Notes:

Kaizen areas of improvement can be selected with QCDSM as follows:

Quality:

  • It is important that the products are of very high quality; this is non-negotiable
  • It is also essential that the quality is consistently good
  • Companies use varied techniques to improve the quality of their products

Cost:

  • It is important to have competitive costs for products being put up for sale
  • If the cost of the product is not reasonable, then no matter how good its quality. Consumers will not purchase the product
  • Reducing waste and improving efficiencies are two of the many major ways to reduce cost of your product

Delivery:

  • It is important to deliver the product on time, or customers will find another company which meets their expectations on timely delivery
  • The company must plan and execute the delivery of all orders to ensure that they develop the capacity to deliver on time

Safety:

  • A safe environment in the facility benefits everyone working in the company
  • Everyone working in the facility has to prioritize identification and elimination of hazards

Morale:

  • It is important to keep employees’ morale high for a positive impact on other areas of the business as well
  • A company with high employee morale will perform much better than the one with low confidence among employees
