FAQs on Coaching Plan

What is a coaching action plan?

For any company to grow, it's necessary to figure out where the employee is struggling or what skills & resources he requires to be pertinent to complete an action or goal.

A coaching action plan is a set of guidelines to build & develop the employee's skills and guide them towards achieving their career goals faster, easier, and more efficiently. Employees working on their career goals also leads to the company's success in turn.

A suitable employee coaching plan showcases behavior changes, requirements, goals, expectations and required skill advancements needed for employees to achieve specific objectives. It's a detailed evaluation of the employee's skills, strengths, and weaknesses.

What are the key elements of a coaching plan?

Whether it’s a prompt guidable conversation or a formal coaching session, these are the five elements to be considered for effective coaching:

  • Establish and focus: Any coaching session begins with setting clear and concrete goals and objectives. A coaching plan must include directions, employee expectations and the ultimate goal.

  • Explore through assessment: This is an important step, which requires the coach to actively listen, ask insightful questions, identify the strengths and weaknesses of employees, and analyze the situation through perspectives. Asking open-ended follow-up questions allow coaches to obtain unfiltered facts, which are critical to a company's growth and success.
  • Identifying goals: Goal identification is where the assessment and feedback turn into purposeful action. It is important to help the employee progress towards achieving a positive outcome. Instruct employees to select a measurable goal that is likely to create engagement.

  • Action Planning: The goal of this stage is to implement a goal and decide its course of action. It includes breaking down bigger action plans into small doable tasks, identifying barriers, making suggestions to improve, and having specific directions to accomplish goals.

  • Follow-up and support: This last step ensures accountability, motivates employees  and provides encouragement. This step is sometimes ignored or forgotten. Following up on the employees’ goals is critical in ensuring that the actions occur at the right time. A coach should exhibit two skills: 1) recognizing and appreciating progress and achievements, and 2) encouraging the employee to overcome obstacles.

What are the seven steps of coaching?

Following are the critical steps of coaching:

Step 1: Building Relationships- The foundation of any coaching plan is based on the manager's relationship with his employees. Conducting an effective coaching session is impossible without mutual trust.

Step 2: Open to Discussions: The next step is to clarify the reasons and objectives behind the session in a non-evaluative way. This way, employees tend to open up more about their needs and impediments.

Step 3: Getting Agreement- This step involves convincing the employees that the problem occurs and needs to be fixed. This stage also entails the significance of the action plan and measures to be taken to achieve desired results.

Step 4: Find Alternatives- Next step is to explore alternative solutions. This is achieved through a brainstorming session with employees and encouraging them to come up with a perfect solution.

Step 5: Choosing an alternative- This step requires getting a verbal commitment from employees on what alternative the managers finally choose. It also includes the milestones and timelines of the action plan.

Step 6: Manage excuses- Employees may make excuses at any point of coaching. Managers should be prepared to handle any excuses and inform employees about the value and significance of the action plan. Make sure to praise the employees for their choices and suggestions.

Step 7: Provide feedback- Good coaches understand the value of providing regular performance feedback to their employees, both positive and corrective. This helps employees to self-observe and improve their skills.
