Every time the need to develop a product arises, the discussion starts with new features that the product must offer. A comprehensive study of the purpose of the product, survey of the competitor stakes in this field, and the end product customer requirement is what determines those specifications.

All these details are then compiled in a clear and compact form. This document is then shared with the product development team. Of course, the technicalities are left to the expert developers and to avoid any micromanagement. At this stage, the only objective is to create a product that delivers on initial objectives laid down in their product specification templates.

This process of framing a product spec., as it is also called, is not a single-step activity. Rather, it results from considerable research and development done before the final product requirements are assembled. Only then, it is forwarded to developers. Moreover, you need to share your exact expectations with the product development team to achieve the desired result.

For instance,if the discussion is around the manufacturing of any food product, you must specify the nutritional requirements, and the quantity of each unit to be packed. This sort of information shared via product specification templates can, later on, be shared with the marketing team and others doing the advertising of the product and generating sales.

Another example is that of an electronic product being developed. Its product specification template should entail its purpose, ideal sizing, voltage, and the type of end users. Any mention of the circuitry or arrangement of conductor will limit the potential of this project thus inviting micromanagement, (which is to be avoided).

Similarly in pharmaceutical product development, you must share your requirement of drugs to be developed from the point of view of market value and need.

Product specification templates act as a reference right from the start of production to the time the end product is to be distributed across markets, retail shops, and even the suppliers. At this stage, anyone going through a product spec sheet should be able to gather enough information about the product from it. Of course, the philosophy for its relevance and use has also been explained in considerable detail.

At SlideTeam, we have curated the best-in-class product specification templates to meet your needs for the same and gain from it in terms of the clarity and the design on offer. Let’s go through the templates.

FAQs on Product Specification Templates

What are types of product specification documents?

A product specification document is generated whenever there is a requirement to build a new product, roll out a new feature, or to upgrade an existing one. Hence, industries have identified eight types of these documents, these are:

  1. Requirement Specification: It encompasses the components, programs, and techniques required to design a product, service, tool, procedure, etc.
  2. Design Specification: It follows requirement specification and lays down design features desired in any product such as dimensions, aesthetic factors, maintenance needed, etc.
  3. Material Specification: Nature of material with respect to its physical, chemical, electrical, or mechanical properties that are desired in a particular product are enumerated.
  4. Standard Specification: When a product or service is to be designed on a par with the industry standards, a standard specification document is released.
  5. Interface Specification: Software API for system integration and lying down the architecture of how components will intersect with each other in a product or program is specified in this document.
  6. Test Specification: It describes testing processes that would be imposed on product service, infrastructure, machine, environment etc,
  7. Performance Specification: The performance parameters of a product, program, or service that must be achieved everytime it operates are enlisted here for developers to weave the desired product around it.
  8. Quality Specification: These are standards or benchmarks pertaining to design, testing, etc. They can be both tangible and intangible such as physical measurements and sensory like odor, taste, etc.

What are the main components of a product specification sheet?

Here are the five main components that should feature in a product specification sheet:

  1. Product all-about: It’s the head of any document that should cover the title, name of the product, product code, a brief description of the product, its major uses, and reference photos of the product.
  2. Product specifications desired: It covers the physical, chemical, electrical features that are desired in the new or updated product.
  3. Product labeling and packaging requirements: Another additional packaging or storage related information that must be accounted for in the manufacturing process, needs to be included as well under this section.
  4. Standards and Certifications: Does the product need to function or work according to industry standards? Is certification needed?, this requirement also needs to be mentioned in this doc.
  5. Optional Requirement: Embedded logos, or other brand specific requirements also need to be accounted for in a product spec sheet.
