In 2005, Marvel’s CEO, Avi Arand, and COO, David Maisel, convinced the board of directors to get in a risky deal with Merrill Lynch to get the production house funded. Consequently, they received $525 Million to make movies based on 10 of Marvel’s characters. But if the first four flopped, they would have to give the rights of the remaining six superheroes to their creditors.

Although, in 2008, Iron Man, the first movie produced under this new deal, grossed around $600 Million worldwide, inspiring Disney to acquire Marvel.

This anecdote signifies that not all risks have a negative impact and can, therefore be turned into opportunities. In fact, according to ISO 901:2015, all companies should consider risks and opportunities as part of the quality management system.

But how should they proceed?

Risks can be of varied types, including social risk, human resource risk, innovation risk, business continuity risk, strategic risk, operational risk, compliance risk, and more. However, to manage them, companies need to become “ambidextrous organizations” that successfully exploit and protect the present opportunities, and explore future innovations. This process further includes four steps…

  1. Identify risks and opportunities by determining the source—considering the past, developing customer sensitivity, learning from other companies, and implementing scanning/scenario planning techniques.
  2. Manage risks by assessing the organizations' ability and appetite to accept them—considering the willingness to bet, size, financial health, reputation, experience, agility, and more.
  3. Evaluate the risks and opportunities by using methods like PESTEL analysis, Porter’s Model, SWOT analysis, ROI method, and others.
  4. Lastly, treat the risks and convert opportunities into success, monitoring the outcome regularly.

If you, too, are planning to categorize your opportunities and risks, these steps will surely help you boost earnings, save time, enhance productivity, and reduce the negative impact on the customers. You can incorporate them into our 10 well-structured risks and opportunities templates, crafted by our team of industry experts. So grab them immediately without any second thoughts.
