Company History

Coinbase was launched in June 2012 by Brian Armstrong & Fred Ehrsam. They wanted to create an easy way for individuals to buy, sell and store bitcoin.

*Fred Ehrsam is a former Wall Street trader who has written about the intersection of economics and software. He graduated from Duke University, where he studied computer science and economics.

*Brian Armstrong, CEO, graduated from Rice University with a degree in computer science and worked as a software engineer at Airbnb before founding Coinbase.

The company launched as a regulated bitcoin exchange and provider of digital wallets, enabling users to transact with new digital currencies. In 2016, the firm launched the first regulated US-based cryptocurrency exchange.

In the years since its launch, Coinbase has grown into one of the world's most trusted brands in crypto and is used by more than 43 million customers across the globe. The filing has been made confidentially, proving that Coinbase wants to become a public company without revealing its financial details. Coinbase has over 35 million verified users worldwide as of September 30, 2020.

Coinbase's IPO came when Bitcoin hit all-time highs, and BTC/USD reached $64,000 last week. This helped Coinbase grow its revenue by 200% in Q1 2021 compared to the previous year's same quarter.

What Has Been the USP Of Coinbase's Tremendous Success?

How to Build a Seed Round Pitch Deck Like Coinbase?

VC firms and angel investors are notorious for being hard to get a hold of. To get their attention, you need to know the right people at the firm and how to make them interested in your idea.

One way to spark interest is by creating a well-crafted pitch deck. A great pitch deck tells your story and details your plan for success with compelling graphics and language. It also showcases why you're the right person or team to tackle this specific problem and why now is the perfect time for your product.

Many entrepreneurs have pitched to investors, but only a select few have raised tens of millions of dollars from top firms like Coinbase. There are no guarantees or shortcuts when raising funds for your startup, and you can learn and improve by studying successful pitch decks.

In this post, we'll help you create a unique pitch deck in the style of Coinbase — the most well-funded bitcoin startup and one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the world. You'll get a sneak peek into what went on behind those closed doors in Silicon Valley when Coinbase raised funds. I've analyzed Coinbase's original pitch deck and compiled a list of key lessons to learn for you.

Lesson 1: A Visually-Engaging Cover Slide is a Must

When pitching investors, it's essential to grab their attention from the first slide, and a visually-engaging cover slide is a must in your pitch deck.

The cover slide is usually the most viewed slide of a pitch deck, and it's the first thing investors see when you present to them your business model and how you plan to execute it.

The primary purpose of the cover slide should be to pique your audience's interest, so they continue reading through the rest of your pitch deck. If a potential investor isn't intrigued by what they see on this slide, they probably won't read further.

An attractive title slide could mean the difference between getting funding or being passed over by investors.

Lesson 2: Table of Contents Cannot be Overlooked

The table of Contents is often the most overlooked aspect of a pitch deck. It's usually the first thing your audience sees, yet it is often given little thought or effort.

In its most basic form, a table of contents serves as a road map to your pitch, and it helps the audience navigate through your presentation. A good table of contents lets the person reading your slide know what they will be seeing in each section and how much time it will take them to get there.

Lesson 3: A Powerful Problem Slide

A powerful problem slide is a must in a pitch deck and can stir up emotions and make the audience empathize with your pain. Include a picture of the problem, show people suffering from it or describe it, and show how bad it is.

A Good Problem Slide Should Address the Following Four Things:

#1 A Clear Statement of the Problem. The problem you plan to solve should be clear to your audience. Remember, your investors are generally not domain experts or part of your target customer base, so be very explicit with your description.

#2 Explain Why It’s a Big Problem That Your Target Customers Care About. You have to convince potential angel investors that they should care about the problem you're trying to solve and that it's big enough to merit their investment.

#3 An Indication That You Understand How Customers Currently Deal With the Problem. Investors want to be sure that you understand how customers currently deal with the problem and thus will value your solution to it. Do some research on what people are doing now and how much they spend on those solutions (e.g., Google searches, market reports).

#4 An Indication That the Market Is Growing/Stable/Sized Appropriately for Your Venture and Its Life Cycle Stage (I.E., Early vs. Late Stage). Is this a growing market? How saturated is it? How BIG is the potential market?

Lesson 4: Key Statics Could Be the Game-Changer

This is a typical slide comparing you to your competitors. It shows the number of users, how many items you have compared to others, and your unique selling point. The visual is also very important for this slide.

The Key Statics Slide Shows the Sales of the Company and Some Other Financial Metrics Like:

- Revenue growth rate (%)

- Gross profit margin(%)

- Revenue per user(ARPU)

- Sales and marketing expenses as %age of revenue

- Number of customers

- Customer retention rate(%)

- Customer acquisition cost(CAC)
