We've all heard the trope that you should "Pitch Like Your Life Depends on It," but how do you go about doing that?

Whether you're struggling with what to include, how to structure it or who to send it to, figuring out this part of the process can be incredibly challenging.

However, to make your life a lot easier, we reviewed Talkdesk's original investor presentation, and we love to share it with you.

About Talkdesk:

Via Giphy

Talkdesk is an US-based cloud-centric call centre software platform. It allows companies of all sizes to compete with big players by offering an easy and affordable way to add a high-quality, branded customer experience to their existing product or service.

By bringing together all inbound and outbound channels in one software platform, Talkdesk helps companies create an omnichannel contact centre.

The company serves thousands of business customers in more than 130 countries, including Uber, T-Mobile, and Spotify.

The Story Behind Talkdesk:

Biz Stone, the co-founder of Twitter, said, the world needs more Cristina Fonsecas, and he couldn't be more right.

Fonseca, who was previously the COO of Red Ventures, has an unrelenting drive to make a difference. If her work is affecting millions of lives the way it's doing now, we can't wait to see what her next venture will be.

As Fonseca says, do more than is necessary, care more than is expected, and be kind to everyone you meet.

As an entrepreneur, I have the chance to impact millions of people in some way, Fonseca told us.

Today, Talkdesk is used by over 2,200 companies across 130 different countries.

The idea for Talkdesk came about when the co-founders were working on another project. Cristina Fonseca and Tiago Paiva began using Twilio, a cloud-based communication platform, and it made the product management process much simpler and more efficient for their business.

After using Twilio in several projects, the founders knew that it would be a product they needed to build. At its core, Talkdesk is an application program interface (API) that provides the communications infrastructure businesses can build their contact centers. It is a cloud-based platform that allows businesses to connect with their customers through various channels.

The contact centre application managed by Talkdesk functions as the central hub for the business.

It compiles all of their interactions in one place, which allows them to monitor and improve customer service across multiple channels.

In late 2011, Talkdesk was born.

The main advantage of Talkdesk is that it integrates with almost any business system.

The benefits of integrating with an existing platform include "Ease of Management and Complete Visibility Into the Customer Journey."

These integrations allow businesses to communicate with their customers through several communication channels such as phone, email, SMS, and chat.

The main communication channel of choice is the telephone.

Phone communication is the most natural way of communicating, says Fonseca.

Even today, phone communication is still the preferred method for many consumers.

The benefits of Talkdesk's phone communication integration are the ability to route calls based on set rules, where customers can navigate through IVR options, and the ability to customize calls.

Fonseca explains that customers prefer to press one number over another when navigating an automated system.

Nuances are taken into consideration with each interaction.

At Talkdesk, they aim to “Remind Companies That the Little Things Matter.”

Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the main features that Talkdesk integrates into its platform.

One example of this is the Talkdesk Einstein.

Like IBM's Watson, it can understand natural language and understands tone and intent.

It can understand a ton of different languages, which is a huge benefit. This makes the product more available to parts of the world where English is not the primary language, says Fonseca.

Talkdesk also integrates with Amazon Alexa for both skills and smart home devices. Empowering businesses to leverage technology is Talkdesk's ultimate goal. The future of the contact centre is one that the customer, not the business, owns.

Talkdesk is the #1 rated contact centre software on G2Crowd. Other companies that are disrupting this space are Twilio and Nexmo.

Fonseca believes they are on the right track because there “Is a Lot of Room for Improvement in the Contact Centre Space.”

A Quick Overview of Talkdesk Funding

Seed round led by Storm Ventures in 2014. Series A funding valued at more than $1 billion came from Draper Fisher Jurvetson and Salesforce Ventures. In comparison, series B raised US$230 million last year with the help of new investors like Japan's Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (SMF).

In 2018 they closed on a record-breaking deal that valued them around 10+B dollars after closing their most recent fundraising effort.

Lesson 6: Introduce the Team

For any startup, even more so when you're pitching your company to different VCs and angel investors, the team is everything. No product can be created without people to bring the idea to fruition.

The team behind the startup is one of their most valuable assets, which is why every investor wants to know who's behind the company they are being pitched.

Lessons 7: Provide Details of Previous Funding Rounds

Why Provide Details of Previous Funding Rounds in a pitch deck?

In a pitch deck, why include details of previous funding rounds? When investors look at a deck to convince them that the business has great potential, they often look for those tell-tale signs of prior funding rounds. Details include venture capital firms and the amount of investment they invested or the list of angel investors. This tells them that some established players are investing in this business. These lists of previous investors can help a startup company in several ways:

  • It allows the business to attract high-quality investors that may not be interested in an unproven business
  • It gives the investor confidence that others have already invested in the business, which indicates that this is a worthwhile project.
  • It can be used as a selling point for potential customers and business partners to convince them that this company is serious and believes in the future of the business.
  • When used with a good pitch deck, it can improve your image in the eyes of investors, suggesting that you are a good investment and that they should look deeper into the business.
  • It is clear to investors that they risk being left behind if they don't invest in this project.

Lesson 8: Explain Why You're the Best

It's not enough to say that you're the best. Show why you're better than everyone else and how that will change their lives for the better.

Talkdesk's presentation uses various parameters — spanning from CEO rating, the number of employees to revenue — to show where they stand against the competition.

Lesson 9: Customer Testimonials

Customer testimonials can be the difference between a successful and unsuccessful pitch deck. They validate your value proposition and provide insight into real-life scenarios in which your product or service has changed the lives of others in positive ways. They allow investors to identify with your story and help you stand out in a sea of other pitches.
