Mark has his wishlist ready. He wants to go skiing, learn Spanish, go for wine-tasting, have six pack abs, and build his own business empire.

Sounds wonderful but does not sound like a plan.

Why?

Because his goals are vague. It’s like you are moving aimlessly without any direction.

Same goes for the business expansion. You want to take your business to the heights. But where and what is the plan?

Making and settings goals are different.

Fortunately, both are easy.

You need to have specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time bound goals which can be applied to both your personal and professional life.

This is also known as SMART goals.

It is observed that marketers who set SMART goals are more likely to achieve success than those who don’t.

What are SMART goals?

A SMART goal is a path that gives you direction to what you want to accomplish.

Let’s dig a little deeper.

Specific:

The goal should be specific. Must focus on one clearly defined metric. Let’s just say, a marketer works around with KPIs. So, he can pick one KPI where he thinks he needs to improve for more sales and growth.

Measurable:

You should be able to measure the goal progress. Increase in sales is not specific. How much is the increase in sales you want as compared to the last month is a SMART goal.

Attainable:

I won’t say an attainable goal is a goal that is easy to achieve. But yes, it considers the employee ability to achieve it. The goal should not be so hard that it pushes you and your team to the limit where you just feel demotivated to achieve the goal. Have a meeting with your team and consider goals that are ambitious but attainable also.

Relevant:

Ask yourself once: Are these goals relevant to me or to my business? Will these goals be useful to the overall growth of my business? Are these goals credible and related to the current trends of the business? If your answers are yes, yes and yes then you are setting goals that will benefit your company.

Time Bound:

Set a deadline. Put an end date to your goal and ensure you achieve your goals within a deadline.

So, now when you know what SMART goals are. Connect your marketing goals to the SMART goals.
